What should I wear?

Skaters should wear comfortable, layered clothes.  Water resistant outer layers are helpful.  Gloves or mittens are recommended.  Socks should be snug and not bunched.  Only wear one pair.  Properly fitted helmets are suggested.  You may want to wear a hat and scarf as well.

Do I need my own skates?

Skates can be rented.  Make sure they fit snuggly.  Our sizes run from a child's 6/7 to adult 13.

Do you have lessons available?

Yes, we offer group and private lessons.

How early should I arrive before group class?

We suggest arriving 15 - 30 minutes before class.  This allows time for finding a parking space, checking in, lacing up skates, and storing belongings.

Where do I store my belongings?

We have lockers available for rent.  Remember they are first come first serve.  If you are renting skates, we will hold onto your shoes in the skate rental room.

How do I find my group class?

Check in at the front desk for your wristband. Your instructor will meet you under the sign with your skaters level on it. Your instructor will hand out your skaters free passes on the first day of classes.

What if I have never skated before?

Many of our skaters have never skated before.  You should start in the Snowplow Sam 1 (ages 3.5-5 yrs) or Basic 1 (ages 6-17yrs).

I am interested in hockey, do I need a special class?

All beginner skaters begin in our basic classes.  The lessons learned in these classes are appropriate for figure skating, hockey or recreation skating.  Once your skater can skate independently, you are eligible to enter Pre Hockey 1.  Our Pre Hockey coaches will recommend hockey clinics and our house league when your child's skating skills are strong enough.

How often should I practice?

Practice makes perfect.  Skate as often as possible and practice what you have learned in class.

Can I walk on the ice with shoes to help my child skate?

Everyone must have skates to step on the ice surface.

Can my child use double runners/double blades on the ice?

Skaters are not permitted to use double runner skates on the ice.

Should I get my skates sharpened?

We do recommend that all new skates be sharpened.  There is a skate sharpening service located on the premises.  Please check at the front desk.

Where can I purchase skates?

We recommend purchasing skates from a reputable Hockey or Figure Skating Pro Shop.  Port Jeff Sports, located at our Hauppauge location provides quality figure and hockey skates and equipment in a range of prices.  Please call them directly for their hours of operation at 631-232-3222 Ext 227 or 631-232-0565.

Preschool Academy

What are the Preschool Teacher's qualifications?

All preschool head teachers hold a certificate in early childhood.  This ranges from a Child Developmental Associate Credential to a Masters in Early Childhood Education.

All staff continue to further their professional development by completing ongoing training.

All preschool staff become First Aid and CPR Certified as well as fingerprinted and background checked.

What security measures does the Preschool take?

Safety is our number one concern here at The Rinx Preschool Academy.  Our doors are open during arrival and dismissal and locked at all times during the day.  Parents are welcome at any time.  Please press the buzzer for approved entry if you would like to come up to the preschool during regular school hours.

All children in our facility need to be escorted at all times.  Parents escort their children to their classroom door signing them in in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon.

What are your school hours?

The Rinx Preschool offers programs ranging from 2 hours to 5 hours.

8:45 am - 3:30 pm

Does your facility offer an outdoor play area?

Yes.  We have a fenced in outdoor play area.

Do the children skate?

All children enrolled in one of our 3, 4, or 5 year old programs will receive group skating lessons, a free pair of skates, and skating bag.  They will also receive a skating pass allowing them to skate during public sessions through our school year at no charge.

How do I find my group class?

Check in at the front desk for your skating pass and wristband.  Your pass will have the lane assignment and instructor's name on it.  The first day of classes your teacher or an assistant will meet you at the group lesson entrance and help you to the lesson area.  Once you know where your lane is, you'll be able to meet your teacher there each week.

We offer a wide selection of food and drinks at our Time Out Cafe and vending machines.  No outside food or beverages are allowed.
